  2. Syntax The way words and phrases are arranged to form sentences. ex: This sentence makes sense because syntax.

  3. Subject The person or thing performing the action or being discussed. ex: Tommy shot his phaser at the mean substitute.

  4. Predicate The part of a sentence or phrase containing an action. Ex: Alazar ditched the class.

  5. Clause A grouping of words containing a subject and a predicate, can be part of a sentence or the sentence itself. ex: JT scoffed

  6. Independent Clause A clause that stands on its own as a sentence. ex: John yawned

  7. Dependent Clause A clause (subject + verb) that does not express a complete thought. ex: We will all cheer when Alazar comes to class.

  8. Sentence Fragment Incomplete sentences (often dependent clauses that have no independent clause for context). ex: JT dropped out of school. Because he wants to be a rapper. #jteezy

  9. Compound Sentence A sentence that contains 2+ independent clauses with no subordinate clauses. ex: JT drops mad rhymes, and Tommy eats from a hat.

  10. Complex Sentence A sentence containing an independent clause as well as one or more dependent clauses. ex: Tommy is an OG because he’s been in the game forever.
