  1. Technical Sustainable Management Egyptian Approach to Raising Management Standards in the Water Sector Case study Impact of onenergy saving Eng: Fayez Badr fayez.badr@giz.de # 01229007111 senior advisor Water and wastewater management programm (WWMP) Giz-Egypt 8 May 2014

  2. Definition of Technical sustainable management program(TSMegypt) It is an Egyptian programm aims to enhance water services to reach to the international standard • Definition of Neighborhood day : • It is a forum for the stakeholders of the TSMEgyptfacilities to discuss challenges, and knowledge transfer • This programm highlighted energy saving of O&M cost

  3. Case studies on energy saving as an impact of TSM-Egypt certificate 1- Balaqse WWTP 2- QahaWWTP

  4. 1- Balaqs WWTP Basic data Location: Cairo-Egypt Area:85 Acr Design flow:600.000m3/d Treatment technology: conventional activated sludge Year of operation :1992 Year of certification: 2011 Power factor: 0.83

  5. Impact of installation of power factor capacitors bank • 1-Claim of power factor • The annual power factor penalty = 150.000€ • total claims in 14 year =150.000×14=2.100.000 € • 2- Saving calculation: • Installation cost of the capacitors bank =500.000 € • Life time of the capacitors bank =14 year • Annual penalty =150.000 € • Pay pack = 3.3 year • Annual saving in 14 year = • 2.100.000-500.000÷14=114.000 €

  6. Power factor before and after installation of capacitors

  7. Max demand • Definition • it is a penalty add to the monthly electrical bill If the • facility consumed electricity more than the contracted power • Measurement • The electric company install peak load meter, to measure it • the potentiometerof the meter moves after 15 min of consumption to be add for the next extra Contracted consumption.

  8. Max demand • Calculation • Momentaryconsumption considers as an annual consumption not momentary consumption. • penelty • cost of the contracted KW= 0.29 pound • Cost of KW=21 pound • i.e. 72 times

  9. Peak load meter

  10. Impact of TSM-Egypt certificate on power saving • Balaqs WWTP get rid of the annual max demand penalty which was 50.000 €/year after application of the following programms: • SOPs through: • Pumps operation • Operate the electric generator during peak load period • Apply an Interactiveoperational plan of the electrical equipment. • Apply routine maintenance plan • Training

  11. 1- QAHA WWTP Basic data Location: Qaluobya -Egypt Area:6 Acre Design flow:10.000m3/d Actual flow :4500 m3/d Treatment technology: activated sludge (extended aeration-Kruger technology ) Year of operation :2004 Year of certification: under citification

  12. Plant Lay out

  13. Impact of modification of operation plan • The plant have two trains, both of them was in service although • it is receives half of the design flow • Action: • Stop one of the trains to be a stand by • Component of the train • 4 rotating brushes -45 Kw/each • Beside modify the operating time of the RAS& WAS pumps • from 12 hour to 8 hour /day

  14. Electric Power bills analysis
