  2. Lascaux, France • Over 130 Paleolithic caves found in France near the northern slopes of the Pyrenees. • Many rock shelters and natural caves in limestone.

  3. How did people get in the caves? During Paleolithic times the entrance looked like this…

  4. In 1940 Lascaux was discovered… • 4 teenagers found the cave, their names were: Marcel Ravidat, Jacques Marsal, Georges Agnel et Simon Coencas

  5. How did they get in? A huge pine tree had fallen and then there was an opening to the cave…

  6. The boys slipped through the opening and made their way down into the cave. They could barelysee with their lamp.

  7. They entered into what is now called “The Great Hall of the Bulls.”

  8. Large red cows, yellow horses, bulls and black stags…

  9. The next day, the whole cave was explored up through a narrower passage. This time they had to descend by using a rope. • This time they found the Bird-headed Man from the Scene of the Dead Man.

  10. The news of the cave spread like wildfire!The villagers came, and then archeologists.

  11. For many years archeologists studied the cave and people visited the cave. Then in 1962 the cave was closed because the paintings were starting to deteriorate.

  12. The carbon dioxide in the air acidified and began to corrode the walls.Green patches of algae and moss began to form on the walls.

  13. So many people want to see the cave, so the French Department of Tourism recreated a life sized cave.

  14. Lascaux is one of many important caves we will study.
