  1. Needs and Requirements PanelAn Academic Perspective Todd Mosher Utah State University

  2. Academic Requirements = Opportunity

  3. Recent U.S. Government Programs NASA • USRA/NASA STEDI-launched two satellites; evolved into UNEX • UNEX-launched one satellite then cancelled • UNESS-cancelled before selections made DoD • University Nanosatellites-some success currently 13 universities competing for one launch • First Minotaur Launch-1/26/00; co-manifested multiple university satellites • First ESPA launch-?-Military schools (NPGS, USAF Academy, Naval Academy)

  4. Surrey Envy • Surrey Space Technologies Limited (SSTL or Surrey) has built, launched, and operated more micro-satellites (constellations not included) than any other single organization • Surrey has become a buzz-word, symbolizing the type of capability that other micro-satellite manufacturers would like to achieve

  5. Surrey Launch Opportunities • Surrey has used a number of launch vehicles: • Initial two launches were free secondary payload launches on a Delta II provided by NASA • Ariane IV and V were used for 9 launches via the secondary payload capability provided by ASAP • Other launch vehicles used for primary or shared primary payload launches: • Athena • Dnepr • Zenit • Tysklon • Cosmos • 11 of 23 satellites launched as secondary payloads • 5 launches included 2 of Surrey’s satellites in a single launch, resulting in only 18 separate launches for 23 satellites

  6. Academic Requirements Academic Requirements = Opportunity Desirements • A program like NASA sounding rockets with periodic launches compatible with M.S. and Ph.D. schedules • Support for or reduction of paperwork • Regular ESPA opportunities like Surrey had with ASAP • A dedicated launch (i.e. Falcon or RASCAL) once a year for university satellites
