  1. Karin Hvidberg Nilsson, Favrskov Municipality Susanne Østerby, Local Danish Advisory Service Groundwater catchment Hinnerup

  2. Three important statements Hinnerup drinking water • from the work in the groundwater catchment Hinnerup

  3. Statement 1 Catchments are dissimilar – and demand different solutions

  4. Catchments are dissimilar – and demand different solutions The catchment covers 340 ha Close to urban areas Partly adjacent to forest area Possibilities for receiving subsidies for afforestation. 90 % of the catchment is nitrate sensitive. Nitrate leaching are to be cut by 46 % in the area Water works and wells Catchment and project area Groundwater catchment Hinnerup

  5. A green band between the two towns Hinnerup and Grundfør More part-time farmers and a more hobby dominated use. Afforestation In this groundwater catchment it will be necessary to work at both farm level and catchment level in order to reach the environmental objectives. Catchments are dissimilar - and demand different solutions Catchment Hinnerup Possible solutions for the catchment Hinnerup

  6. Statement 2 Farms and farmers are different – this is mirrored in the possibilities for creating solutions

  7. Different farmers create different solutions • 5 project farmers. Together they farm 55 % of the land in the catchment • Most of the farmers are older and on their way to winding up their farms • No children who wants to take over • Two farmers plan to sell within a few years • There are several smaller pig production farms in the catchment area Project farmers at a meeting

  8. Solutions for the project farmers in Hinnerup: Means that do not demand investment in new technology. Selling land to the Waterworks or to the state of forest. Plans for making the properties and their surroundings more attractive for part-time farmers. Different farmers create different solutions

  9. Statement 3 Knowledge is essential as well as involvement

  10. Knowledge is essential as well as involvement • All partners must have access to the same knowledge • Integrated advising of the farmers lead to voluntary changes in the farming praxis on each farm Uncertainty leads to restraint among all partners, when it comes to solving the problems Catchment Hinnerup

  11. Knowledge is essential as well as involvement Knowledge ___________ Acceptance______________ Motivation ____________________ Action Information Reduction demands Dialogue Action plans Involvement Integrated advising

  12. Our own learning from AGWAPLAN Important: • to have full confidens to the counterpart • to have the same knowledge: agriculture and authority • to have faith in the used models and methods – to understand the basic models • to have common agreement on the goal • to understand each other (use the same terms) • results can be achieved on farm level as well as on catchment level • involving both environment and production leads to new ways of solving problems
