  1. Feeding Infants Birth – 11 Months

  2. Infant Meals Infant meals: • Are required • Must meet infant meal pattern

  3. Breast Milk & Formula • Required for all infants • May combine to meet requirement • Discard within 2 hours of preparation/service

  4. Breast Milk Meals with breast milk may be claimed only if: • served in bottle by center staff • meal contains all other required components (8-11 months) • Exception • Nursing mother is center employee • Baby is fed during work hours

  5. Formula • Must be • Iron-fortified • USDA approved • Must have • “House Formula”

  6. Infant Formula Waiver • If parent prefers own formula: • Need signed infant waiver on file-USOE form • Informs parent of center requirement to provide house formula and meals • Center may claim meal if: • Parent’s formula meets requirements • Meal pattern is met

  7. Portion Sizesfeeding schedule • Portion sizes - ranges to give flexibility. • Serve at least minimum portions to meet requirements. • Feed according to infant’s normal eating schedule and habits. • Example: younger infants eat more often

  8. Birth - 3 monthsBreakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Snack Serve the following: 4-6 fluid ounces of breast milk or iron- fortified formula

  9. Between 4-7 months • Introduce solid foods • Recommended: • signed parental request on file before feeding “optional” components • Dry infant cereal must be iron fortified • No purchased combination dinners

  10. 4-7 monthsBreakfast Serve the following: 1. 4-8 fluid oz. breast milk or formula (IF) 2. 0-3 Tbsp. infant cereal (IF)

  11. 4-7 months Lunch or Dinner Serve the following: • 4-8 fluid oz. breast milk, or formula (IF) • 0-3 Tbsp. infant cereal (IF) 3.0-3 Tbsp. of fruit or vegetable or both

  12. 4-7 monthsSnack Serve the following: 4-6 fluid oz. breast milk or formula (IF)

  13. 8-11monthsBreakfast Serve the following: 1. 6-8 fluid oz. breast milk or formula (IF) 2. 2-4 Tbsp. infant cereal (IF) • Non-infant cereal (Cheerios, Rice Krispies, etc.) not creditable 3.1-4 Tbsp. of fruit or vegetable or both

  14. 8-11 months Lunch or Dinner Serve the following: • 6-8 fluid oz. breast milk, or formula (IF) • 2-4 Tbsp. infant cereal (IF) OR • 1-4 Tbsp. meat fish, poultry, egg yolk, cooked dry beans orpeas; or • ½-2 oz. cheese; or • 1-4 oz. (volume) cottage cheese; or • 1-4 oz. (weight) cheese food or cheese spread 3.1-4 Tbsp. of fruit or vegetable or both

  15. 8-11 monthsSnack Serve the following: • 2-4 fluid oz. breast milk or formula (IF) or 100% fruit juice 2. 0 – ½ slice bread or 0 – 2 crackers

Feeding Infants Safely • Do not serve: • Honey to infants under 1 year old • Fruit juice to infants under 8 months old • Avoid choking hazards by: • Avoiding or cutting round foods very small • grapes, hotdogs, bananas, cherries, etc. • Avoiding small, sticky or hard food items • nuts & seeds, peanut butter, raw vegetables, etc.

  18. Infant Meal Record • Infant Meal Record: • Full name • Age (in months) • Breast milk or brand of Formula • Date • Foods served for each meal type • Amounts served of each component

  19. After 1st birthday • Use combination of formula and cow’s milk to help transition infant to milk • Allowable from 12th to 13th month
