  1. ESSENTIAL MATERIALS FOR THE NATIONAL EXAM

  2. The Review of the English Curriculum • English Curriculum consists of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing skills. • English language has two discourses, i.e. Oral and Written. • In the English Curriculum, discourses cover functional and monologue texts (Essay).

  3. National Exam: • National Exam (UN) 2012 onwards is based on the competence (the 2004 Curriculum or the Standard of Content), it’s not based on the intersection among the Standard of Content (SI), the 1994 Curriculum and the 2004 curriculum any more.

  4. The National Exam covers Listening, Reading and Writing skills. • Listening skill: interpersonal/transactional dialogues and monologues. • Reading skill: functional texts and monologue texts. • Writing skill for SMA: • Arranging sentences into the correct text (recount/procedure/narrative/descriptive) and, • A close procedure (3 test items) – Vocabulary (derivational forms).

  5. Essential Materials for listening skills: Conversation/dialogue: 1. Interpersonal/ transactional dialogues: • The general idea, • The detail information, and • The specific information. 2. Expression (Gambits): • Ungkapan rasa tak percaya (believe/unbelieve) • Ungkapan rasa puas/ tidak puas (satisfied/unsatisfied) • Ungkapan menyatakan/ meminta pendapat (opinion) • Ungkapan berjanji (promise) • Ungkapan harapan (hope), etc.

  6. 2. Monologue: • Descriptive/report text: the main idea, the specific information. • Recount text: the main idea, the detail information. • Narrative text: the main idea, the specific information/ the detail information, etc.

Essential Materials for the reading skills: Functional texts: • Message: general idea, reference • Letter/email: general idea, communicative purpose, detail information, implicit information. • Announcement: general idea, detail information, specificinformation, informasi rinci. 4. Advertisement/brochure: specific information, general idea, detailinformasi , implicit information. Monologue Texts: 5. News Item (2): general idea, specific information, detail infromation, main idea. 8. Recount: specific information, main idea, detail information, implicit information. 9. Report: general idea, detail information, specific information. 10. Descriptive: general idea, detail information 11. Explanation: general idea, detail information, communicative purpose, implicit information, word meaning. 12. Exposition (analytical and hortatory exposition): specific information, general idea, main idea, word meaning. 13. Discussion: specific information, general idea,detail information, main idea,implicit information. 14. Review: specific information, general idea, detail information, implicit information.

Reading skills: • Scanning skill (reading to find out the specific information, such as time, place or the main character) • Skimming skill (reading for the gist or the main idea, and the general idea) • Intensive reading skill (reading to find out the detail information or explicit or implicit information)

  9. The 2013 Curriculum • Thematic integration year 4 • Scientific Approach to all subjects – observation, inquiry, testing, processing, presenting, concluding, creating. • Importance of critical thinking (how and why questions) and presentation skills. • Cross curricula – linking English.

  10. The main idea or the topic sentence: Richards and Schmidt (2002, p. 558): state that: • “a topic sentence is a sentence that describes the topic, the purpose or the main idea of a paragraph, i.e. that states what the paragraph is about.” • In writing an essay, a topic sentence can be located in the first sentence with the other sentences adding illustrative or supporting details. • Alternatively, it can be located in the final sentence of the paragraph. • Sometimes the topic sentence in a paragraph can also be unstated but implied. • In English, a topic sentence often contains an opinion that will be proved or supported in the paragraph or statement that the writer will explain in more detail in subsequent paragraphs.

  11. STRATEGY FOR THE SUCSESS OF THE NATINAL EXAM • Teaching or drilling the essential materials. • Trying out students with materials and indicators of National Exam more than 3 times. • Discussing the test items of TO with students intensively. • Discussing the past National Exam items with the students in detail. • Learning the past National Exam (40%) and predicting the next National Exam (60%).

  12. Practice Exam: Speaking Skill The exam of Speaking skill is conducted by each school oriented on their capacities, English teachers and students’ abilities which led and instructed by Department of Education of each Province.

  13. Speaking Skills: • Interpersonal/ transactional dialogues, • Monologue such as story telling, describing a thing, report, explanation, discussion, review and debating etc.
