  2. What do we mean by ‘embedding’? • ‘Embedded teaching and learning combines the development of literacy, language (ESOL) or numeracy with vocational and other skills. The skills acquired provide learners with the confidence, competence and motivation necessary for them to succeed in qualifications, life and work’

  3. Dual learning objectives • If LLN skills are embedded into sessions learners need to have clear vocational and LLN learning objectives • LLN skills need to be explicit but not just geared to passing national tests • Some learners may need additional LLN sessions

  4. Language and learning: the connection • languagefor classroom interaction • language to access subject knowledge • language to develop subject skills • language to prove achievement • language to express individuality • language for thinking, reasoning and understanding requirements and learner needs

  5. How to embed? • Involve the learners • Link the vocational and LLN objectives • Work together with LLN and subject specialists “The embedded approach failed to work only when vocational teachers were also expected to teach literacy and numeracy.” National Research and Development Centre for Adult Literacy and Numeracy, 2006
