  2. What is social Documentary ? Social documentary photography is the recording of humans in their natural condition with a camera. Often it also refers to a socially critical genre of photography dedicated to showing the life of underprivileged or disadvantaged people

  3. Practitioners Lewis Hine Jacob Riis Joel Meyerowitz (911) SebastiãoSalgado Bill Brandt Diane Arbus Robert Frank William Klein Mary Ellen Mark Don McCullin

  4. Health & Safety/Ethical Considerations From research there is a weak amount of information on health and safety procedures or precautions whilst creating/ making social documentary’s. However, we make/ gather our own ideas as to what safety issues may need to be taken. For example, whilst making documentary’s, it involves capturing raw images of situations and the political happenings that may shock the viewing audiences and because they are taking in the moment, there are issues as to how the people with in the images may react to their picture being taken or being caught in the act of political conspiracy.

  5. Technical Equipment used by Practitioners Generally photographers of this genre will choose to use equipment they are most comfortable with and as of such there is no common piece of equipment, generally however, most chose to use an automatic focus lens as it allows them a greater level of clarity in there shots and allows a faster pace of collecting images to ensure they gather a good amount of images in more dangerous and drastic situations.

  6. ‘Raising The Mast’ – Lewis Hine Location chosen is very abstract and extreme. Clear example of a social documentarian image as it grasps the health and safety issues of that time from one great high angle shot, capturing the reality and hazardous of the situation. Using the subject as a measurement comparison of his height and the great scale of the buildings in the background. Natural light coming from the left hand side, highlights the more larger buildings as well as the subject, this again shows the focal points of the image as well as the scale differences as the smaller buildings are shadowed over by the taller ones.

  7. ‘Ground Zero’- Joel Meyerowitz The purpose of this image is to shock and give reality to the public about a situation many could not see clearly. Meyerowitz was the only photographer to be allowed on to the ground zero sight after 911 and as of such his photos were priceless. In the shot shown his emphasizes the destruction through use of scale having, diggers dwarfed by the rubble surrounding them. This is also shown in the contrast in tone where the destruction is dark and has a greater amount of detail, this is then contrasted by the pale bright sky shown in the back ground. By having this contrast Meyerowitz also gives the image a peaceful and calm feeling where as the real situation has a far from calm and happy aspect.

  8. Destination Of Images The majority of images gathered in this genre are used in personal portfolios, where photographers set out n projects to gather images that they can then release in a book or a public file to shock the public. Images may also be used for governmental support or conflict to support current events in the world, in newspapers or articles all over the world.
