The Hornet Style Book is a condensed summary of research and documentation guidelines.
You can use the Hornet Style Book to learn about the Academic Integrity Code, as well as how to conduct and document research.
A SCAVENGER HUNT! In just a few minutes, we’ll challenge you to a scavenger hunt. But first, a little practice….
TRY THIS!Here’s your task: Your teacher has asked you to write a short essay about a film that was popular during the Great Depression. In conducting your research, you have found a film called Sullivan’s Travels. You write down all the information about the film.
Your teacher expects you to submit a “works cited.” Here’s an example of a complete works cited from p. 32.
You need to find out how to create a works cited entry for Sullivan’s Travels.
Some of the basic information you need to know when citing sources: • Is there an identifiable author? • What is the title of the work? • What is the format? (Book? Film? Website?) • When was the work published? • Where was the work published? • Did a company publish the work? If so, which one?
Let’s figure out how to create a works cited entry for the film.
Here’s the information you may have written in your notes: • Sullivan’s Travels came out in 1941. • The studio was Paramount. • Preston Sturges directed the film. • The film stars Veronica Lake and Joel McCrea. • The film is 90 minutes long. • It’s in black and white. (This information is on your activity sheet, too.)
You need to include this source in your Works Cited. You will need to look at Section V:
Your citation should look like this: Sullivan’s Travels. Dir. Preston Sturges. Perf. Veronica Lake and Joel McCrea. Paramount: 1941. Film.
Wasn’t that easy??? The Hornet Style Book is a reference tool. You don’t have to memorize the information…. You just need to know where to look it up!
Let’s try two more for practice: In your unit on the Great Depression, your teacher has asked you to find a popular novel from the era. She has also asked you to find a famous Farm Security Administration photograph.

Now, let’s look up how to cite the sources: Here’s an example on p. 21: And another on p. 26:
Photographs: Purdue’s Online Writing Lab says:1. Include the artist's name. 2. Give the title of the artwork in italics. 3. Provide the date of composition. (If the date of composition is unknown, place the abbreviation n.d. in place of the date.) 4. Provide the name of the institution that houses the artwork followed by the location of the institution.
Your entries should look like: Lange, Dorothea. Destitute Pea Pickers in California. 1936. Photograph. Library of Congress. Steinbeck, John. The Grapes of Wrath. New York: Viking, 1936. Print.
Now, let’s add your previous entry to make a works cited. You works cited should be alphabetized. It should be double-spaced.
