  1. Ethnography Group Project Presented by Bob Munson BUKAL Life Care & Counseling Center

  2. Project: Ethnographic Field Work Instead of meeting for one day, the class is asked to do a QUICK “38 Peso” ethnographic survey.

  3. Step A. Choose a Micro-culture • Recommend street peddlers on a certain street, or vendors in a certain compound. • Be prepared to purchase some candies or street sticks.

  4. Step B. Talk to/with them • It is good to have thought of a general question to ask. <“If you die tonight, where do you think you will go?” is a bad question.> • Find out something about where they are from, how they are doing (economically, etc.), aspirations, fears, etc.

  5. Remember… -It is recommended that one just be friendly like a talkative person on the street. If asked, it is okay to tell them that you are taking a class that requires you to talk to strangers. -Don’t force it into a religious discussion, do not proselytize. -Be a learner. -Don’t take notes.

  6. Step C. Write down observations afterwards • Generally, what was said (with whom and where) • Observations (not just what was heard) • Insights

  7. NOTE: • Step A will happen in class. • Step B and C will happen on the day that we will NOT meet for class. • Step D will happen in class on the following day.

  8. Missions Thought • We have found in the past that vendors were willing, even happy, to share their own fears, hopes, and dreams with others. (When they are not busy, afraid of police, and when we are ready to listen.) • Is this useful to know if we are involved in missions?

  9. Step D. Share observations and insights with others in group. • Compile insights and recommendations into some sort of organized form. • Present them verbally in class (one person acting as spokesman).
