  2. Important information • The English test has 5 passages and 75 questions: • 9 min. per passage • Set a goal score • 21 48/75 correct • 25 58/75 correct • 31 68/75 correct

General Principles • Skim the first few sentences in each passage quickly, noting both its content and style. • Verb tense – present, past, future, etc. • There is an ominous feud… • By his own admission, author Jean Toomer led an unfocused early life. • Person used in the passage • When you first arrive… • What teases us with giddy possibilities… • They must be able to fly… • Organization of the passage • Look for numbered brackets ([1]). Pay close attention to transitions and topic sentences.

  4. General Principles • While you skim the passages, “edit” the sentences as you read. Determine whether the underlined portion is correct. • 40 usage/mechanics questions • punctuation, basic grammar, sentence structure • 35 rhetorical skills questions – numbers in boxes or brackets • logical sequence of sentences or paragraphs and the author’s use of supporting details • underline key words in questions

  5. General Principles • Answer all questions! • 20% of the answers are NO CHANGE (around 14 questions) • no clue? Go with shortest answer • Pace yourself • 22 minutes – question #38 • need more time? Focus on usage/mechanics questions

  6. What should I NOT do on the English ACT test? DO NOT… • Try to answer the questions without reading the entire sentence or paragraph. • Spend too much time on questions you are unsure of or that require a great deal of reading.

  7. Silent Reading • 10 – 15 minutes of each class will be spent reading silently. You can bring your own expository, or non-fiction, texts or use sample test passages to practice. • Today, please read a passage from an English ACT test and “edit” as you go. Mark the verb tense, person, organization, and any mistakes you notice.
