  8. Students are more likely to succeed when they feel connected to school…the belief that adults in the school care about their learning as well as about them as individuals. (Wingspread Review, Journal of School Health, Sept. 2004)

  9. Making it Happen: • Create a Classroom Community • Establish Rules and Procedures • Motivate Students

  10. BUILDING COMMUNITYIN YOUR CLASSROOM…Because the emotional and social learning systems are foundational to learning

  11. Teacher Role • Greet students • Be enthusiastic and SMILE! • Model active listening • Know your students • Be interactive and visible • Facilitate classroom meetings • Invite student input • Use humor • Celebrate student achievement • Celebrate mistakes as opportunities for learning

  12. “The number one problem in the classroom is not discipline; it is the lack of procedures and routines.” Harry T. Wong

  13. Why? • The teacher has not thought out what happens in the classroom. • The students have not practiced the procedure. • The teacher spends no time managing or facilitating the classroom; instead they discipline students….taking away from small group time.

  14. How to Teach Procedures 3 Step Model • Teach:explain, state, model and demonstrate the procedure. • Practice:rehearse and practice under the teacher’s guidance. • Apply:reinforce the procedure through practice until it becomes a student habit or routine.

  15. Reevaluate procedures and modify throughout the year as needed.

  16. The Result • The procedures that set the class up for success will ensure a positive year. • Teaching and learning in all content areas will be more successful if procedures and routines are set up early. Take the necessary time at the beginning of the year – it is not a waste of time.

  17. Am I giving my students meaningful work or “busy” work?

  18. Practice book pages – Which ones are meaningful? • How can I cover the concept in a more engaging way?

  19. Learning Challenges Every learner presents a unique profile of strengths and weaknesses. We unlock motivation when we acknowledge and address unique learning profiles. - Jim Wright

  20. “Among elements such as a well-articulated curriculum and a safe and orderly environment, the one factor that surfaced as the single most influential component of an effective school is the individual teachers within that school.” The Art and Science of Teaching Robert J. Marzano, 2007
