  3. Habitat: The area or natural environment in which an organism or population normally lives. humans animals living species plants

  11. Ice land A habitat can be very large or very small. A polar bear’s habitat covers the annual sea ice (vast area of land) and they can be found 200 miles offshore. A barnacle’s habitat can be found on a simple rock, shell or whale.

  15. What is a niche? • A niche is an organism’s role (job) in the ecosystem. • It includes what the organism eats, where it lives, and what it does.

  16. Types of niches: Fundamental niche Realized niche

  17. FUNDAMENTAL NICHE can be defined as the range of environmental conditions in which each of the species survives.

  18. REALIZED NICHE can be termed as the range of environmental conditions in which a species is really found.

  23. What is the niche of a beaver? • A beavers niche in the ecosystem includes: • cutting down trees • building a dam to flood an area and make a pond • building a lodge to live in • raising a family of beavers • chewing bark and wood

  24. Red-Tailed Hawk & Barred Owl • Birds of prey • Live in forests on the edge of fields • Eat mice and other rodents • Nest in trees Barred owl Red-tailed hawk

  25. No two species can occupy the exact same niche, because no two species do the exact same thing.

  26. If they do, or try to, there will be competition between the two organisms. One organism will have to change or become extinct.
