  1. Book Talks for the Seventh Grade by Ms. Ewing Turn on your speaker!

Hi! • If you are looking at this presentation, you probably were absent the day I did a book talk for your class. • I prepared this PowerPoint just for students like you, so you will know the most important things I talked about! • I’ve also included summaries of a few books I think you’ll really like!

  4. Historical Fiction • Stories that take place at least twenty years ago • Often carefully researched to give a good idea of what it was like back then • Characters and/or what happens to them are made up by the author • Like taking a ride in a time machine!

  5. The Ballad of Lucy Whipple • by Karen Cushman • California mining town, 1849 • After their dad dies, Lucy and her mom and siblings work hard to make a living by running a boarding house in a tent. • Lucy hates it and wants to go home to Massachusetts! • Funny and sad; like a diary “But, Mama! I can’t go shooting little animals!”

  6. The Bloody Country by the Collier brothers 1770’s, just before the American Revolution Ben’s family is caught in the conflict between the Indians, the British and the early settlers. Action-filled drama with heart True North by Kathryn Lasky Starts in 1858, before the Civil War Afrika is a fugitive slave. Will she make it to freedom on the Underground Railroad? Tragic, yet inspiring! Two Books about War “Look here. I ain’t going back.” “They don’t shoot the ones who carry the flag, do they?”

The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963 • by Christopher Paul Curtis • Michigan and Alabama, 1963 • Kenny’s older brother Byron is so naughty, his parents decide to take him to stay with his grandma for the summer so she can straighten him out, but that means going through the South during the height of the Civil Rights Movement… • Laugh out loud funny and yet very moving “Momma, quick! It’s By!...He’s froze to the car!”

Contemporary Fiction • Stories that take place within the last twenty years • Have pretty realistic settings and plots • Characters and what happens to them are made up by the author • Can be funny or sad; about people, sports, animals or modern events • May be like your life, or like someone you know!

Granny the Pag • by Nina Bawden • Cat has lived with her grandma most of her life. • Now Cat’s parents want her back. • Cat’s grandma can be very embarrassing, but does she really want to go live with her parents who are virtual strangers? • On the other hand, things at school are getting difficult with bullies after her every day… • Funny, with good insights about people “And then I asked myself if I would live to see Rosie again.”

  11. Journey of the Sparrows by Fran Leeper Buss and Daisy Cubias When Maria’s home is destroyed by soldiers, the surviving family members must flee El Salvador. Maria and two siblings make it to Chicago, but how can they survive with no money and no passports? The eye-opening story of a courageous young girl. No Turning Back by Beverley Naidoo Sipho can’t get along with his stepfather, so he runs away to Johannesburg, the biggest city in South Africa, where he lives. He joins a gang of homeless boys to stay alive, but he misses his mother terribly, and is in danger of starving or getting into drugs. Gritty and believable Modern Stories in Other Cultures “I’m here, Julia. I won’t leave you.” “But it helps me sleep when I’m cold.”

Crash • by Jerry Spinelli • Takes place in Pennsylvania • When pacifist Penn Webb moves in next door to “Crash” Coogan, the football jock, Crash makes him the butt of all his jokes, but Penn just smiles and takes it. • Will Penn ever fight back? Will Crash ever figure him out? • A funny and realistic transformation of a young man. “Hasta la vista, hambone. Bam! Bam! Bam!”
