  3. Overview of Mediated Spaces • Approximately 200 spaces • Classrooms • Conference Rooms/Seminar Rooms • Event Spaces • Over 20 Digital Signage Players and over 50 Monitors • Located throughout campus

  4. Classroom Support • Who is involved? • Technology Support Center – Student Consultants • Field Services Staff • OIT Staff • Important Information when reporting problems • Call ASAP • Must have correct contact information

Room Classifications • Why? • Too many different spaces/equipment • Develop a standard • Continuation of efforts • Assist with budgeting • What are the benefits? • Easy to stock equipment/supplies • Allows for familiarity of systems/equipment • Helps with future planning/budgeting • Provides a standard for projects

  6. Type A • Basic Classroom Design • Instructor’s computer • Document camera • Basic technology control device with network accessibility • Video switching/scaling device with analog and digital inputs and digital outputs • Widescreen display device • Connectivity for external HDMI sources

Type B • Advanced Mediated Design • Instructor’s computer • Document camera • Advanced control system incorporating a touch screen for added control • Video switching/scaling device with the ability to transport audio and video output to the display devise via twisted pair cabling • Widescreen display device • Connectivity for external HDMI sources

  8. Type C • Standard Conference/Seminar Room • Presenter’s computer or convenient connection for a portable device Basic technology control device • Widescreen display device • Digital/Analog inputs to the display device

  11. Room Breakdown by Type • Type A – 77(Will decrease by 10 when the Rehabilitation Center opens in Fall 2015) • Type B – 53 (Will increase by over 20 when Rehabilitation Center opens in Fall of 2015) • Type C – 31 • Type D – 10 • Type S – 17

Upgrade Frequency • OIT Upgrades • Over 105 rooms included • Goal is to maintain equipment on a 5 year replacement cycle • Pending budget availability • Large Scale/Building Project Upgrades • Try to budget a 6 year replacement cycle • Try to get maintenance agreement • BRN, TDC, Estate, LSC Phase I & 2 and new Rehab Building

  13. What’s included in the upgrade? • Mediation Upgrade • Projector • Video Switcher • Control System • Ceiling Speakers • New Cabling (Video over Cat6) • Integration into Extron Global Viewer • Remote Monitoring Product • Equipment Usage Metrics • Helps OIT plan future upgrades

What’s next? • Untethered Teaching • Ability for faculty and students to display content from mobile device/tablet or laptop without physically being connected • Looking at different options • Software (Solstice by Mersive & Splashtop) • Hardware (Crestron AirMedia) • Panopto • New Lecture Capture Product

  16. How did we get to Panopto? • Nursing & Counseling Departments were in drastic need of a solution • Had to get away from dated technology • DVD/VHS • Manual Switching • Reliable solution • Secure solution • Easy solution to use

  17. Product Investigation • Mediasite by Sonic Foundry • Implemented in Spring of 2012 in LSC • Two fixed solutions (LSC 334 & 433) • Several bumps along the way • Setbacks for future expansion • Appliance Based (Fixed location) • Very Expensive (>$18,000 per implementation)

Product Investigation Cont. • My Mediasite(Sonic Foundry Desktop Capture Solution) • Newly released • Not ready for the investment • Panopto • Was the subject of a Whitepaper that outlined our scenario almost verbatim • Ease of use (intuitive) • Easy implementation • Scaling Costs were attractive • Beginning to get a large market share of Higher Ed. Institutions

Panopto Pilot • Hosted Solution • Counseling – 8 Graduate Courses • Nursing – 7 Undergrad / 3 Grad Courses • Education – 1 Undergrad Course • Recorded over 380 session, over 700 hours • Simulations, Interview and classroom scenarios were recorded • Continuing during Spring (added 2 rooms) • Integration with D2L

  20. The future of Panopto • Annual License for Campus Wide implementation • Relatively inexpensive in room costs (Camera/microphone) • Training Videos • Traditional Lecture Capture • Flipping the Classroom
