  2. Chapter 1 • The author states that Emily was murdered. How do you think she was murdered? Why do you think the authorities couldn’t discover the cause?

  3. Chapter 2 • What’s the first indication here that a serial killer could be on the loose? Is there any evidence to support that idea?

  4. Chapter 3 • Does Luke learn anything that’s helpful for his investigation?

  5. Chapter 4 • Talk about the purpose for the author putting this lecture into the text.

  6. Chapters 5 & 6 • How was EW3 killed and who might have killed her? • Where do you think Luke’s investigation regarding EW1’s death is heading at this stage?

  7. Chapters 7 & 8 • There are two things going on in this chapter: • 1) clues about the death of EW1 • 2) the relationship between Georgia and Luke • How does the author fit both things together? • Will Georgia help in any way? • Whey do you think Cornelius Prichard might have turned up in the story before?

  8. Chapters 9 & 10 • Are we any closer to understanding EW1’s death? • Is this Emily Wonder a likely victim or perpetrator?

  9. Chapters 11 & 12 • Don’t you find it surprising that the disappearance of an 11 year old is only remarkable because she’s called Emily Wonder? • What makes Luke think he knows what killed EW2? • Might Clint Garrett or Tina Stone turn out to be Q?

  10. Chapters 13 & 14 • “I’m not a performer. I don’t have to please my audience.” How do you interpret this comment? • Why does the boy anticipate danger, and why do the children take off when they see Luke coming? What are they afraid of? • What’s Owen thinking, and what’s he hoping for when Luke and Malc leave him at the warehouse?

  11. Chapters 15 & 16 • Instructor Garrett teaches his Year 9 students about a sitisinversustotalis (heart on right side of chest) crime, and one of his students, Tina Stone, has written about using an icicle to commit the perfect crime. Is Tina likely to have heard the lecture? • Does Luke get any useful information from Owen about young Emily’s disappearance? • We’ve found out that opera singer Emily likes to read myths, and she might have read Ice Cold. Is she going to become a suspect, and does she or any other possible suspect have links with young Emily?

  12. Chapters 17 & 18 • Explain what Malc thinks of Luke’s idea that opera singer Emily, Freya Lamacq, and Barbara Backley might be implicated in the murders. How has Malc formed his opinion? • What are the chain of events that have prompted Luke to request DNA samples from the remaining 43 Emily Wonders? Discuss. • Why are Jed Lester’s track stars running faster than ever before?

  13. Chapters 17 & 18 • Explain what Malc thinks of Luke’s idea that opera singer Emily, Freya Lamacq, and Barbara Backley might be implicated in the murders. How has Malc formed his opinion? • What are the chain of events that have prompted Luke to request DNA samples from the remaining 43 Emily Wonders?   14. Chapters 19 & 20 • Why is Clint Garrett Luke’s main suspect at this point? Which previous suspects has he eliminated? • Does it make sense that Luke thinks young Emily might have drowned?

  15. Chapters 21 & 22 • Given the number of clues that are found in Clint Garrett’s apartment, why doesn’t Luke arrest him? • Is Luke any closer to knowing who the murderer is, and whether young Emily is alive? • Luke is told that the Year 10 criminology student named Emily Wonder is even taller than he is. What is the significance of that remark?

  16. Chapters 23 & 24 • What measures might the murderer have taken to feel certain that nothing incriminating will be found? • Does Emily’s description of Clint Garrett’s attitude toward her match your own? • The murderer doesn’t actually confess to young Emily’s abduction. How do we infer her responsibility?

  17. Chapter 25 • Why might Owen deserve his own youth centre? • Why does Luke think that young Emily might be found at the terminal? • What kinds of clues will Luke be looking for as he narrows his search?

  18. Chapters 26 & 27 • When Luke’s life is in danger, Malc must do all he an to save him, even if that means letting Emily drown. How will Luke feel if the worst-case scenario occurs? • What is Luke alluding to when he asks young Emily to promise she won’t start singing opera? • Does the future suggest tragic or happy lives for young Emily, Luke, and Owen?
