  1. The Role of Ritual in Sacraments and Liturgy Like Dancing Bears

  2. Rituals • Symbolic actions that help us express our beliefs, values and important events withwords and physical actions. • Brings people together and gives expression to their identity • Rituals help us express the sacred and layers of meaning through action.

  3. The Sacraments as Ritual • A scripted rite provided by the Church; sometimes there are various versions of the rite. • Common elements include: • Ritual (thus, theyare called “Rites”) • Words that are said (The “form” of the sacrament) • Physical elements, posture, gestures, choreographed action (The “matter” of the sacrament) • Authentic (not just symbolic) experience of God and grace, mediated through Christ and our presence to one another.

  4. What beliefs, values, events? • The Paschal Mystery: the life, suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. • Each time we celebrate sacrament, we memorialize and share in the Paschal Mystery. • With sacramental grace, we are commissioned to “incarnate” the mystery of Christ in the world.

  5. Not just routine… • Non-ritual routine does not express underlying layers of meaning. • Non-ritual routine is repetition for repetition’s sake, or because it’s more efficient: taking the same way to work, building a part in the same manner, writing an essay in a particular format.

  6. Seven Sacraments Sacraments of Healing Sacraments of Initiation Sacraments at Service of Community Holy Orders Matrimony • Baptism • Confirmation • Eucharist • Reconciliation • Anointing of the Sick

  7. Liturgy All sacraments are liturgy. All liturgy involves ritual and grace.
