  3. Four Year College Path Apply to a variety of schools (average 3-6) Apply to 3 types of colleges: Reach Schools Match Schools Safe Schools
  4. Four Year College Path Research admissions requirements of each college: Academic record: GPA & strength of program Test Scores: SAT, SAT Subject Tests, & ACT Check on individual school requirements for SAT Subject Tests and ACT Writing portion Send directly from testing agency Letters of recommendation, essays, interviews Extracurricular Activities – employment, volunteer experience, etc.
  5. Early Action versus Early Decision Each school is different in regards to their details Many are binding with non-refundable fee Binding = 1st choice If not accepted, application could be deferred for regular decision consideration

Community College Path CCAP – Community College Access Program 2013 requirements HVHS cumulative GPA – 2.5 through the end of their senior year Attended HVHS junior and senior year Provide proof of residency Application deadline by March 29, 2013 Apply to VWCC Completed VWCC financial aid file including FAFSA Placement test Advising Day in Spring 2014

Community College Path Open admissions Prepare for employment or transfer Low tuition, no expenses for room and board Placement tests Articulation Agreements Example – University of Virginia AA or AS completed within two years of admissions 3.4 GPA, a minimum of 54 transferable credits must have been obtained at the time of transfer with at least 45 of those credits coming from a VCCS institution; completed UVA admission application; minimum of 60 credit hours towards the Bachelor’s degree must be completed at UVA

  9. College Application Checklist Counseling Department Deadline: December 2, 2013 (Prior to February 1st) OR 2 weeks prior to application deadline 1. Application Type 2. Secondary School Report/Counselor Report 3. Recommendations Letters 4. Mid-Year Report/1st semester grades 5. RCPS Release of Information 6. I elect for HVHS to send ALL SAT/ACT scores. 7. Scores are required to be sent directed from the testing agency.

College Application Checklist Turn in one for each application you complete with all attachments paper clipped to it Do not turn the checklist in for online applications until you have submitted it Fill out ALL blanks Do not turn form in until all pieces are attached (except teacher/community recommendations) Envelope must be addressed with HVHS as the return address 4 stamps should be included but NOT attached Anything not attached WILL NOT be included

Authorization for Release/Exchange of Record Information Complete all demographic information Write “colleges” and “scholarships” Do NOT need college addresses and phone numbers Include the word “NCAA Clearinghouse” (if applicable) Check the Official Scholastic Record box SAT, SAT Subject, or ACT – HVHS or Student’s responsibility Parent must sign if the student is under the age of 18 Return to the School Counseling Department with your first application

Senior Year College Action Plan Attend College Fair at Salem Civic Center – September 24, 2013 from 2 – 4 or 6 – 8 Register for SAT or ACT this Fall 2013 www.collegeboard.com for the SAT www.act.org for the ACT Plan Open House visitations Visit college websites Attend college visits at HVHS (through Career Center) Start completing applications early
  15. COLLEGE – A WHOLE NEW WORLD New Experiences New Friendships Memories for a lifetime Freshman year – first 6 weeks are critical and most risky Trying to fit in Greek Life, Roommates, Social Life, Balance
  16. PARENTS ARE ANCHORS Set clear, realistic expectations regarding academic performance Stress that alcohol is toxic and excessive consumption can be fatal Know the alcohol scene on and off campus – talk about it Make it clear: Underage consumption and alcohol impaired driving are against the law!!!
  17. Senior/Counselor Interviews Individual Meeting with their School Counselor between September and October Passes will be sent to first block classes on the day of their meeting
