  3. What is Intellectual and Cultural History? • Slaves were of course not allowed to show any signs of culture or intellect. Slaves had so much intelligence that they created a writing system that only they could understand. (Dots and lines representing alphabet and numbers. ) Some cultural history that slaves practiced were going to church, praying at night, and teaching their kids to be respectable towards others.

  4. How Did Slaves Have Intellectual and Cultural History? • Some slaves had very high intellect levels because they chose to push themselves to learn. Most were paranoid wondering if they would be caught learning. They learned to read and write and they taught they’re fellow slave brothers and sisters. They had cultural history because they held on to what they believed in. They practiced those also in secrecy. They did various things to pay tribute to their culture and heritage. If you were to think about how most of them got away with these things that is a very high intellectual thing right there.

  5. Why Did Slaves Have Intellectual and Cultural History? • Slaves had intellectual and cultural history for many reasons. One reason was because their cultural traditions were passed down from generation to generation. The intellect was already being seen and taught by African American activist in the North. ( Fredrick Douglass) They had pretty much had all this history because they refused to let go of the little accomplishments that they had received.

  6. When Did Slaves Start to Develop Intellectual and Cultural History? • The numbers presented in the graph ( next slide) are statistic numbers provided by numerous websites. There was no specific date that slavery started. However sources say that slavery was considered as “un free labor” before it was considered legal. The graph represents the percentage of African Americans that had intellectual history.

  8. Where Did Slaves Have Intellectual and Cultural History? Slaves made history everywhere they went. When they were on the plantations anywhere at any time they practiced they’re culture. They had intellect to know when to do it. On a plantation in Alabama it was recorded that every Tuesday night the slaves had someone give speeches bout how they would soon be set free.
