  5. Service user perspectives (1) • Service users don’t want to retell their personal story. • Spending on info systems shouldn’t be at the expense of providing care staff. But enough should be spent to make them reliable • Systems should share information to support a patient-centred service rather than collect information for information’s sake. • Users and carers should be involved in early discussions about proposed shared care record systems. • Service users should always have the right to access their record ‘unless the doctor felt it would be particularly harmful’. • Any system should be as simple as possible, and secure. • Good information technology can aid good care delivery by enhancing decision making, but is no substitute for good carers. Service user perspectives (2) • A shared care record should contain information about: • who is involved in providing care; • how to contact the client; • early warning signs of a crisis; • and current problems/diagnosis. • Systems should provide a link for social workers to health information and vice versa. • Nosiness and ‘fishing’ expeditions shouldn’t be allowed. • Systems should be designed for compatibility. • Not having an electronic shared care record would be worse.
