Methods for Transporting Metadata Records via OAI • OAI-namespace Registered: • Uses unqualified DC as the metadata format • Metadata uses XML schemas (the OAI DC one) • Namespace identifier registered with OAI • Non-registered: • Use any metadata format • Metadata uses XML schemas (comment out DTD lines or don’t make validation references) • No OAI registration, but maybe registration with potential trading partners like DLESE DLESE OAI April 29-30, 2002

  12. DLESE OAI Software • Transports metadata records in • Unqualified DC format • DLESE-IMS format • Any metadata format • Available on SourceForge as version 1.2 • Uses OAI Protocol version 1.1 DLESE OAI April 29-30, 2002

DLESE As Service Provider • DLESE-IMS: Harvest and discover now • Simple DC: Harvest now; discover in late Fall 2002 • Advantages of being harvested by DLESE: Allows collections to be discoverable without the collection provider having to create a local discovery system DLESE OAI April 29-30, 2002

Discovery in DLESE with Harvested DLESE-IMS Records • As a recognized (branded) collection: • Follows DLESE Collection Accession Policy • Additional search capabilities (by icon brand) • As individual records: (no icon brand): • Records are not part of a recognized collection • Still register collection name & label with DLESE • Collection must meet DLESE Scope Policy DLESE OAI April 29-30, 2002

  15. DLESE as Data Provider • DLESE-IMS: Being provided now • Simple DC: Begin providing by fall 2002 perhaps summer 2002 DLESE OAI April 29-30, 2002
