  1. SBb and Sb Galaxies A Study of M81 and M109 By: Emily, Hillary, Karen, and Drew

  2. Spiral Galaxies • Collection of spinning gas and dust around a central nucleus • Two kinds of spiral galaxies: Spirals (S) and Barred Spirals (SB) • Three subsets for each type • Barred Spirals: SBa, SBb, SBc • Regular Spirals: Sa, Sb, and Sc

  3. Purpose of the Project • Compare the locations of the prominent blue and red stars in a spiral and a barred spiral galaxy

  4. What We Did • Used the 12” and its filters (luminous, blue, red, and green) • Imaged M81 and M109 • Used blue and red filters for comparison • Used all filters to create a combined color image

  5. M109 Blue Filter Red Filter

  6. M81 Red Filter Blue Filter

  7. Conclusions • Relatively identical star locations • SBb (M109) had more red stars in the spiral arms than the Sb (M81)

  8. M109 Color

  9. M81 Color

  10. Other Images Taken With Extra Time M17 – Omega Nebula M57 – Ring Nebula
