RSA in Austria • RSA is part of of Austrian Road Safety Programme • Introduction of mandatory safety checks for all road construction projects • Creation of a handbook with checklist • Pilot projects on the entire road network – including roads within city limits • Evaluation of the pilot projects and of the handbook • Instruction of auditors

RSA in Austria • RSA Handbook including checklists was published in August 2004 • RSAs are not compulsory at the moment • Currently the RSA guideline is under progress of being made compulsory for the motorway network • An updated RSA Guideline is currently prepared (should be ready in summer 2005)

  5. RSA in Austria • 15 Audits on the motorway network have already been carried out • Experience in all audit phases from planning to opening phase • Generally positive results • ~25 deficits were found in each audit phase and ~20 have been solved

  6. RSA in Austria • The RSA is currently commissioned and financed by the road owner • RSAs are carried out by teams of auditors (road safety experts) from the • Austrian Road Safety Board • Civil Engineers specialized in road safety • Experts from the administrations

  7. Future of RSA in Austria • Pilot projects on the low level road network • Increase use of RSA in the provinces • Lobbying for RSA in provinces • Introduction of RSA courses for auditors • Compulsory RSA on motorway network
