Oral Thrush & fungal infection: Things to know about

Oral thrush occurs if there develops yeast infection in the mouth. This is also referred to as simply thrush, oropharyngeal candidiasis or oral candidiasis. It occurs mostly in toddlers and infants, causing yellowing or white bumps to appear on tongue and on inner cheeks.

  3. Occurrence: Oral thrush occurs if there develops yeast infection in the mouth. This is also referred to as simply thrush, oropharyngealcandidiasis or oral candidiasis. It occurs mostly in toddlers and infants, causing yellowing or white bumps to appear on tongue and on inner cheeks. However, these bumps alleviate with treatment.

  4. Infection caused is mild and is not that serious. However, people suffering from weakened immune systems can experience spreading of the infection to the other body parts. It can cause serious complications.

  5. Symptoms: • It might not cause symptoms during early stages. However, as it gets worse, the following symptoms might develop: • Yellow or white bump patches on inner cheeks, lips, gums, tonsils or tongue. • If there are scraped bumps, then slight bleeding is caused. • Cotton like sensation caused in mouth. • Burning or soreness in mouth. • Difficulty in swallowing • Cracked, dry skin at mouth corners, etc.

  6. In few cases, the oesophagus could be affected due to oral thrush, although uncommon. Same fungus which causes this issue might even cause yeast infections to develop in other body parts. Fortunately, there is available antifungal lip treatment to cure this issue.

  7. Causes: Yeast infections and oral thrust occur mainly due to C. Albicans (fungus Candida albicans) overgrowth. Some amount might reside in the mouth, which is quite normal without any harm experienced. In case, body microorganisms’ balance gets disrupted or there is compromise of the immune system, then fungus might go out of control.

  8. Is it contagious? In case, you develop oral thrush, then there are high chances of the fungus being passed on to the other person on kissing them. Oral thrush causing fungus might even cause yeast infections to develop in various parts of the body. The fungus may be passed on from your body to the other person’s body.

  9. Diagnosis: It is necessary to consult the doctor to diagnose presence of oral thrush. The qualified doctor will examine the mouth to check for characteristic bumps which are generally caused by such infections. In few cases, the doctor might suggest availing biopsy of affected region, so as to confirm diagnosis. To carry out biopsy, small portion from the bump is taken from the mouth. Then this sample is sent to the lab for C. albicans testing purpose.

  10. In case, doctor suspects oral thrush development in oesophagus, then endoscopy or throat swab culture will be used for confirming diagnosis. Tissue sample is taken from throat’s back part and sent to lab for testing purpose.

  11. If the fungal infection is less or just started, then the doctor may suggest using of lips fungal infection cream for treatment purpose.
