  2. VC and Value System • Value chain: Input supply Production post-harvest Trading Processing trading Consumption • Value chain actors: Actors involved in ownership of commodity and value addition • To be contrasted with service providers (also called business development services (BDS))

Service Providers • Public (extension, input supply, research, market information etc.): provide service mostly for free, but also for fee • Private (transport, processing, storage, etc.): provide service on fee • If service is provided by the value chain actor itself for own business, service becomes part of the value chain actor activities • Any service adds value

  4. Value system • The system that comprises the value chain actors, service providers and the institutional environment in which the value chain actors and service providers operate, including the institutions that govern their actions and interactions.

  6. Performance measurement framework • A framework of result statements, indicators, Baselines, targets, data sources, data collection methods, frequency of data collection and responsibilities • A guide for M&E data collection • LIVES has a PMF based on its logic model (LM).

Sampling strategy • Commodity combinations: 37 • Total number of PAs: 902 • PAs with commodities: 783 • Sample size: 0.25 of total PAs = n • Proportion representing a combination: frequency of combination/783 = k • Sample size of the combination = k* n = l • Then to distribute l across zones: • Frequency of the combination in the zone/ total frequency of combination = m • Then sample size of the combination in a zone = m*l • Then randomly sample PAs for the combination in a zone from among the PAs that have the combination • Total number of sampled PAs = 194

  8. Selection of focus group members • About 10-12 people • PA admin officials • DAs • Village leaders • Women • Commodity representation • Multipurpose coops • Traders

  9. Key informants • People with deep and broad knowledge about the subject • Could be: • Experts • Elderly • Successful • Popular/Respected

  10. Triangulation • Triangulation: collecting data from at least three different sources or three different methods • Purpose: to check accuracy and reliability of data • Always better to triangulate data collected based on qualitative methods • Triangulation sources: records, groups, key informants, previous research, experts, etc..
