  2. Biology • the biology discourse community is made up of many different individuals and groups. Therefore, while being in different groups and thinking differently, they all write in the same format, and for just about the same reason: to get published and to be known • When and where a persons research gets published, people within the community, from perspective students to researchers doing ground breaking work, will read the publication. • Even though there are many different parts of the bio community, they share the goal of possibly bettering humanity

  3. Chiropractor • Is a person that treats patients with musculoskeletal systems problems, which includes a persons bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. • The education required to become a chiropractor is • 3-4 years of undergraduate school, followed by a 4 year Doctor of Chiropractic degree program • While being a chiropractor, one will treat patients of varying ages

  4. Veterinarian • Veterinarians are doctors who specialize in animal medicine • While in college one should focus on getting a BS in biology, with a possible minor in chemistry. The curriculum that is required for the BS is the foundation to taking multiple entrance exams and MCATs(Medical College Admissions Test) required for entrance to a Vet-Med graduate school.

  5. Pediatrician • Those who want to become a pediatrician should enter a biology curriculum heavily focused on the cellular and genetic make up of living organisms. • While there is not a specific degree required to become a pediatrician, it is recommended to obtain a BS in biology, chemistry, or physics • Should focus on a BS of biology due to biology focusing on life sciences and the study of the human body

  6. Pediatrician cont • Are doctors that specialize in the treatment of adolescents and children • After becoming a pedestrian, one must take a written exam every 7 years

  7. Criminal Justice/ Forensic Science • Criminal justice is the system of practices and institutions of governments directed at upholding social control, deterring and mitigating Crime. • Works hand in hand with forensic Science • Forensic science applies the broad spectrum of sciences and technology’s to assist in investigating crimes

  8. Forensic Biologists • Forensic biologists examine blood and other bodily fluids as well as hair, bones, insects, and plant and animal remains to help support criminal investigations and identify victims • Forensic biologists will examine biological evidence on weapons and clothing to determine the time and cause of death

  9. Professional and academic societies and associations • Within the bio and criminal justice community, there are major associations and societies that one can join. • the NABT or National Association of Biology Teachers, and the NABR, the National Association of Biomedical Research, are examples of some associations where one can join and possibly have their work published. • another example is the NCJA or the National Criminal justice Association.

  10. Uses APA and MLA citation formats. Tumor Necrosis Factor is a cytokine that induces apoptosis (Sarin, 1995). Listing an article from a book Toole, B. P. 1981. Glycosaminoglycan in morphogenesis. In: Cell Biology of Extracellular Matrix (E. D. Hay, editor), Plenum Press, NY, pp. 259-294. These styles are used due to the documentation style most commonly used if these communities. It-text citation also allows for an easy reference point in the document While writing or talking, people in the bio or criminal justice fields, as with any other type of community, use jargon. In bio the use of species names, full name of compounds, and terms for a persons field may be used and understood by another member In the criminal Justice field, the APA style is used due to the method of documentation Common conventions are lab reports, write ups, cause and effect and persuasive essays, scientific publications, etc. Citation styles
