  1. Deliver Customizable Instructional Content to 10,000 to 40,000 Users? No Problem! The iStudy for Success! Project at Penn State University Yvonne Clark Sloan-C International Conference November 18, 2005

  2. Agenda • What is iStudy for Success! ? • Delivery method, ANGEL • Audiences • Module design • iStudy Web site • Marketing and buy-in • Using modules in ANGEL CMS

  3. What is iStudy for Success!? • Instructional materials addressing academic skills necessary for a successful career at Penn State • A delivery method • 22 topics • Target first-year students

  4. Modified Content • Changed from classroom centered to student centered • Wanted to avoid use of plug-ins • Re-worked AuthorWare pieces • Put everything into the ANGEL course management system

  5. Virtual Student Conversations

  6. ANGEL • Two types of content containers: Courses and Groups • Many easy to use instructional tools

  7. Audiences • First-year students • First-year Seminars • Instructors • Student advisors • University Learning Center staff and students • Individual students • High school students through special Penn State projects

  8. Audiences • Total anticipated audience at Penn State is 10,000 - 40,000 asynchronous users with varying needs and interests • Both classroom use and individual use • Additional users through Friends of Penn State accounts

  9. The Problem Problem: How to modify the original materials in such as way as to meet the needs of so many different users, and deliver them using ANGEL… without creating an administrative nightmare.

  10. The Solution • Make each topic a self-contained module and use the export/import wizard in ANGEL to allow each user to own the content. • Result: Everyone with a Penn State Access Account could create a group in ANGEL, import the content, and customize it to suit their needs.

  11. Importing a module into an ANGEL group or course: http://cms.psu.edu

  12. Module Design

  13. Formative Evaluation • Pilot testing was conducted Fall semester, 2004 • Modules were officially launched on January 3, 2005

  14. Marketing and Buy-in • Marketing took place in January, February, and March • Got buy-in from upper-level administrators • At the end of May 2005 approximately 500 modules were in use • At the end of September 2005 approximately 1300 modules were in use

  15. Web Site Use • Preview and link to modules at the iStudy Web site (http://iStudy.psu.edu) • Web site usage averages 200 users per day viewing 600 to 700 pages • Two modules don’t use any ANGEL tools - people seem to link to them rather than importing them

  16. What’s Next? • Teach users to create their own modules in ANGEL • Share the modules and libraries with the Penn State community • Faculty, staff and students can build their own libraries (like iStudy) • Users could create groups of content specific to their needs and interests

  17. The iStudy for Success! Web site • More information is available at the iStudy Web site: http://istudy.psu.edu • Content for modules can be previewed and linked to at the Web site, however, quizzes and activities only work in ANGEL
