Emancipation Proclamation • January 1, 1863 • Order issued by President Lincoln declaring slaves in the Confederate states to be free. • Confederates largely ignored the document • For the people in the North, this order changes their reason for fighting from a fight to keep the union together into a fight for freedom!

Gettysburg Address • Issued after the Battle of Gettysburg as a dedication of the Gettysburg cemetery • Honors the memory of the soldiers who died (over 50, 000)-Union wanted to take soldiers home but the Governor wouldn’t let them for fear of spreading disease. • Brings up words and ideas of the Declaration of Independence • Begins “Four Score and seven years ago…” • Score = 20 years…what happened four score and seven years ago???

  5. Appomattox Court House • April 9, 1865 • Robert E. Lee’s troops are surrounded on 3 sides in the city of Appomattox Court House, Virginia • Lee realized he had lost and surrendered • Terms of surrender: • Confederate soldiers could keep their horses and mules • Officers could keep their swords and weapons

Lincoln’s Assassination • April 14, 1865-Just 5 days after Lee surrenders and the Civil War is considered over • John Wilkes Booth and other conspirators had a plan to kill Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson, and a few other men in the name of the Confederate cause • Lincoln and his wife were attending a play at Ford’s Theater in Washington DC • Booth shot Lincoln in the back of the head during the play • Lincoln died early the next morning and would be known as the first president to be assassinated.
