Mrs. Murrell amauldin@greenville.k12.sc.us 355-1569 January 27, 2014 News From Room 26 Important Dates 1/29- 2nd Quarter Awards 1:00 1/31- 100TH Day of School 1/31- Fresh Fruit Friday Parent Notes A Peek At The Week: Math: We’ll begin looking at various strategies for subtracting two and three digit numbers. Remember, many of these strategies and the terminology used is new to you, so if you have any questions about your child’s work, please ask! Reading: Our skill this week will be understanding the story elements. We’ll read Mr. Tanen’s Tie Trouble from our reading book to help us practice this skill. Phonics: We’ll focus on words with the long /e/ sound. Our lessons will also discuss making words that end with –y plural. Writing: We’ll practice using the correct form of “be”. Students will also begin working on our next type of writing, fictional narratives. Social Studies: We’ll look at the roles of our leaders at the local, state, and national levels and study their responsibilities. Science: We’ll explore the properties of solids. • Students received their first “Sunshine Math” worksheet last week. This is a program completely run by our PTA. While this program is not required for my students, I do encourage students to participate. These weekly worksheets will encourage deeper, “out of the box” thinking- a good practice for Common Core Standards! Please remember this should be the students own work!! • Our 2nd Quarter Awards Ceremony will be Wednesday, Jan. 29. Students will receive awards for A honor roll, A/B honor roll, perfect attendance, Terrific Kid, and the “BUG” award. Lunch Menu Tuesday- yogurt, gumbo with rice, grilled cheese sandwich, Asian ginger soup & salad Wednesday- yogurt, chicken, pasta marinara, chicken noodle soup & salad Thursday- yogurt, Thai sweet chili with rice, baked potato, broccoli cheese soup & salad Friday- yogurt, pizza, BBQ sandwich, vegetable beef soup & salad
