  1. SOURCE C Germany is a young and growing empire. Her world-wide trade is rapidly growing. Germany needs to protect that trade and her interests even in the most distant seas. The Kaiser in an interview with a British newspaper, 1908. Study Source C. How far does this source explain why there was an arms race between Great Britain and Germany? Use the source and your knowledge to explain your answer. (6)

  2. Use your exam criteria to mark the model answers which follow. Record the level and the mark you would award on your MWB. Try to give a reason for your choice also. Reasons why there was an arms race was because Germany wanted to build a navy to rival the British navy. The Kaiser was a military man and pushed Germany to build up its arms, he was worried about the threat of war which was building up at this time throughout Europe. Level 2 – 3 marks

  3. In Source C, The Kaiser says that Germany has a ‘growing empire which needs to be protected’. Germany had started to build up its colonies overseas, mainly in Africa, and was developing its trade. The Kaiser and the admirals in his navy, believed that the German navy needed to be stronger to protect these colonies and trade interests. Level 3 – 4 marks
