  1. INCOME AND FOOD SECURITY THROUGH SUSTAINABLE COMMERCIAL EGG PRODUCTION AND MARKETING AMONG SMALL SCALE IRRIGATION FARMERS

Overview Objective: • to replenish lost disposable assets of vulnerable rural communities through the promotion of sustainable poultry egg production model and improved market linkages. • The programme is operational in Umzingwane District at Umzinyathini irrigation, targets 100 households • 81% of the farmers are members of the Umzinyathini irrigation and 19% were from outside the scheme but within the surrounding community.

  3. Inputs/Design • 20 pullets per hh (1600 pullets distributed to 100 hh) • 20 groups of 5 hh per group(1 common fowl run compartment per 5hh) • Construction material provided to beneficiaries • Feed(3mths supply) • Maize from irrigation source of cereal, farmers purchase concentrate after 3mths

Progress • Registration, Input distribution • Construction of fowl runs(deep litter system) Trainings- • Training of extension staff on layer husbandry • Farmer training on business leadership and conflict resolution Farmer training on layer husbandry-ongoing • Mainstreaming HIV and AIDS, Gender • Egg production ,laying% ranging between 75-80% • Establishment of local markets in Umzingwane • Constitution development

  5. Revenue to date-$255 to $3616 • Average expenditure per month-$29 to $2858 • Profit margin per month to date-$226 to $758 • Best fitting model for sustainability: high egg price, low feed cost, high off hen price

Best practice • Collective marketing by farmers taking advantage of economies of scale in marketing the eggs. • Multi stakeholder participation enhancing sustainability of the programme • Vet-disease control;DLPD-Co-ordination,training;SNV-marketing;MOWGCD-Supervise community projects • Mainstreaming gender equality in project implementation (47men:53women). • Improved participation of farmers through provision of labour, skill, purchase of outstanding construction material ,purchase of supplies and equipment

  7. Lesson learnt/Challenges • Project started late in October, inputs also delivered late • Need to improve type of market established preferably contract type to ensure sustainability • Pullets came in batches affecting cash flow • Low market egg price, high concentrate price

  8. Way Forward • Training farmers on development of a marketing plan and strategy • Extended monitoring beyond project time frame • Farmers have resorted to purchasing straight feed

  14. Participatory Health and Hygiene training by MOH Farmers use open source of water for drinking thus the training promotes good hygiene standards, minimising loss of hh personnel participating in the layer project
