  2. What is plagiarism? • Using another author’s words without quotation and citation • Using and citing another author’s words without quotation • Rephrasing another author’s words with citation • Extensive quotation and citation of one or more articles

  3. So what is appropriate citing? • Quotation: • Exact wording in quotes with a citation • Reference to ideas, facts, and information: • Discussing, in your own words, the ideas, facts and information from another person’s work with a citation

  4. How do I approach research? • Do • Discuss facts and information broadly in relation to the entire work or idea • Intertwine facts from other work with your primary purpose and explain your reasoning for using specific facts and information • Use introductory or explanatory phrases to present ideas from other authors • Cite author and year in the text and include additional information in a reference section including author, year, title, journal, volume and issue number, pages.

  5. How do I approach research? • Do • Focus on your primary purpose in writing an article or research paper and use other authors’ work to support your ideas • Use a variety of research sources so that you can have a variety of perspectives to discuss • Include your own ideas and reasoning but explain and support them with a logical rationale

  6. How do I approach research? • Note: All submitted papers will be included as source documents in the Turnitin.com reference database solely for the purpose of detecting plagiarism of such papers. You may submit your papers in such a way that no identifying information about you is included. Another option is that you may request, in writing, that your papers not be submitted to Turnitin.com. However, if you choose this option you will be required to provide documentation to substantiate that the papers are your original work and do not include any plagiarized material.

  7. How do I approach research? • See me any time for assistance with written assignments • Contact the CSLA University Writing Center for assistance with written assignments.
