Why ONS should do analysis • To fully exploit the use of the Census data/outputs • Helping users to understand and interpret Census outputs • Contextualising Census outputs by incorporating them in topic reports, adding insight to policy and other users • Ability to analyse data at low levels of detail • More robust survey outputs

Purpose of the ONS Census Analysis Programme • Produce more timely analysis • Providing users with a planned & coordinated release programme that ties in with outputs • Prioritises analyses to meet user needs • Coordinated approach • Across ONS • Across the UK • External researchers/academics • Aim to maximise benefits

Examples of analytical products (1) Ageing & older people: • Electoral statistics; estimates of the population eligible to vote and analysis of voter registration rates • Demographic profile and characteristics of older people • Living arrangements of older people (private households and communal establishments) Fertility & Families: • Total Fertility Rates for 2011 by mother's country of birth • Analysis by family size • Other analysis of characteristics of children/families/households

Examples of analytical products (2) International Migration: • comparison of international migration estimates for year to March 2011 with 2011 Census data on address one year ago, & estimates for the past decade with 2011 data on year of arrival • analysis of the characteristics of both long-term and short-term international migrants • analysis of residents of communal establishments by country of birth and nationality • comparison of activity last week with reason for migrating collected in the IPS Internal Migration: • comparison of internal and cross-border migration estimates by age and sex • development of a data visualisation tool that maps internal migration flows

How the analysis will be presented • Short Stories • Generally based on detailed analysis • Presented so accessible for all users • Data visualisations; infra-graphics; podcasts • Scholarly Articles • Detailed pieces of analysis • Reports • Accompany publications • Provide clarification on specific issues

Current analysis plans – how this links to the outputs • Analysis from 1st outputs release • - Update of mid-year estimates & reconciliation report • - Population pyramids • Analysis from 2nd outputs release • - Short stories • Aim to promote Census outputs & to compare against 2001 • Publication strategy in line with release of outputs • - Regional report highlighting key findings • Analysis from subsequent outputs release • - More detailed scholarly articles to follow in 2013 • - Want flexibility to react to changing priorities

How the analysis will be disseminated • Want to promote analysis and stimulate further analysis • easier access for users accessing analysis of Census data/outputs • widening the availability and use of analysis, potentially increasing the number of users • Internal and external analysis • tool to help coordinate analysis across internal & external areas • Provide guidance to users on analysis work associated with the census • A forum to encourage discussion with users and producers of analysis
