  2. Preterite Used to describe an action in the past with a specific beginning or end. (set point in time) (completed action) -ayer, anoche, anteayer... Imperfect Used to describe an indefinite time period ongoing in the past (childhood, once upon a time, etc) cuando era niño, había una vez, érase una vez... Preterite and Imperfect

  3. Preterite Used in a sequence of events—when the action is “moved forward in the past”, preterite is used. primero, entonces, después, luego, por fin... Imperfect Used to describe background information and habitual events. (how something looked etc/ what someone “used to” do. siempre, muchas veces, todo el tiempo, a menudo .. Preterite and Imperfect

  4. Preterite Used for an interrupting action. cuando, de repente Imperfect Describes ongoing action in the past that gets interrupted. mientras (while) Preterite and Imperfect

  5. Preterite Tener-to receive/to have had (like a baby) Ella tuvo un hijo en 1982. Estar-to arrive Estuvimos en la escuela a las 8:00. Imperfect Time (ser) Age and feelings (tener and estar) Estaba triste. Tenía tres años. Teníamos hambre. Eran las dos. Preterite and Imperfect

  7. Verbs that Change Meaning According to Past Tense Used (See page 62 in text.) • Conocer • Imperfect-to used to know who somebody was. • Mario conocía a Susana.- Mario knew Susana. • Preterite-to have MET someone for the first time. • Mario conoció a Susana.-Mario met Susana

  8. Other Verbs With Meaning Changes • Saber • Imperfect-To know or not know information. • Ella sabía las respuestas en la prueba ayer. (She knew the answers to the quiz yesterday.) • Preterite- To find out information for the first time. • Ella supo las respuestas de la prueba ayer. (She found out the answers to the quiz yesterday)

  9. Other Verbs With Meaning Changes • Querer • Imperfect- To have wanted something. Yo quería ganar la lotería (I wanted to win the lottery) Don’t know if it will happen – no follow through • Preterite-to tried to AND to did it (follow through and action) • Ella quiso ir a Homecoming con el caballero (She tried to go with him—and she DID)

  10. Other Verbs With Meaning Changes • No Querer -Imperfect- To not want to do it No quería hacer la tarea y perdí puntos. (I did not want to do the homework and I lost points.) -Preterite – To refuse to do it. No quise hacer la tarea y no me importa. (I refused to do the homework and I don’t care.)

  11. Other Verbs With Meaning Changes • Poder • Imperfect-to have the ability to do it (??? on follow through) • Ana podía entrar la clase. (Ana was able to enter the room—we don’t know if she did or not) • Preterite-to be able to do it & succeed or fail (action has been completed—there is follow through) • Ana no pudo entrar la clase. (Ana failed to enter the class—she tried and couldn’t do it)

  12. Other Verbs With Meaning Changes • Tener -Imperfecto – I had Yo tenía frío ayer. (I felt cold yesterday) -Pretérito – I got Yo tuve la oportunitdad de hacer el trabajo. (I got to do the job.)
