Apprenticeship Training Today • Manages the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Program • Ensures that the training offered in training institutions and in industry is of the highest quality • Ensures that the training offered is current and relevant to the needs of employers and apprentices • Administers the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act and General Regulations

  3. Skilled Trades Overview • 66 occupations are designated trades for which Certificates of Qualification are issued • Twelve (12) compulsory certified trades * A Compulsory certified trade is one in which a person employed in the trade must either have a current Certificate of Qualification, be a registered Apprentice, be a registered improver in that trade, or have a current Certificate of Qualification from another jurisdiction bearing the Interprovincial Red Seal.

  4. Apprenticeship Training Today • 80% is on the job learning and 20% is technical training • Apprentice learns and works under the guidance of a supervising journeyperson, usually 1-1 ratio • Individuals can be apprenticed immediately following high school if they find employment • Most apprentices choose to complete a community college program first • Tradespeople who have not formally trained, but have worked time and a half in their trade, can apply for certification through the Trade Qualifier process • Industry sets the standards for training and certification

  5. ApprenticeshipTraining 3 Components of Apprenticeship Training • Practical hands-on experience • paid work experience • Skill Development • apprentice logbook • Technical in-school training • 4-8 weeks each year Qualify to write the Certification Exam

  6. Certification Process-Apprentice Become certified after completing an apprenticeship and passing a certification exam. Pass multiple-choice certification exam after: 1. Accumulating 8000 hrs in trade 2. Successfully completing all theory courses 3. Verifying that trade tasks can be completed to industry standard (These are all tracked in the logbook.)

  7. Certification Process-Trade Qualifier • The trade qualifier process makes the Certificate of Qualification examination available to people who have substantial experience in the trade but who have not been through the apprenticeship program. • To qualify to write the examination must: - provide documented evidence of hours of hands-on work in the trade - provide references from two people who are certified or qualified in the trade that can attest to your skills in the trade

Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program • Provides greater mobility across Canada for skilled workers • Apprentices who have completed their training and certified journeypersons, are able to obtain a Red Seal endorsement on their Certificates of Qualification and Apprenticeship by successfully completing an Interprovincial Standards Examination.
