Separate assessments for Entry, Level 1 and Level 2 Assessment opportunities in Jan and May to be increased as the qualification moves out of pilot phase Edexcel’s Assessment Overview Majority of units are externally marked Five -day assessment window for ICT Detailed feedback through ResultsPlus Currently trialling onscreen and working towards assessment on demand Free practice assessments Alternative adult assessment model to be piloted from 2009

Achievement & Attainment Tables Level 1 Each qualification is worth 12.5 points Equivalent to short course GCSE Level 2 Each qualification is worth 23 points Equivalent to short course GCSE Entry 1 = 5 points Entry 2 = 6 points Entry 3 = 7 points Entry Level What does this mean? • Increases school attainment • Level 2 worth ½ GCSE grade B • Each Functional Skill is equivalent to half a GCSE at Level 1/ Level 2 • Achievement at all three FS worth 1.5 GCSEs combine with ALAN and students achieve 2.5 GCSEs

Functional Skills: Entry Level Available Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3 Start teaching Jan 09 First assessment May 09 Entry 1, 2 & 3 similar to the ALAN Entry assessment model, on demand, small bite sized controlled assessment, internally assessed/externally verified. Functional English – Assessment UNITS 1&2: Separate test papers for reading and writing (from June 2009) Separate tests for Level 1 (2 x 35 mins each) and Level 2 (2 x 45 mins each) Long, short and MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) Externally marked by Edexcel UNIT 3: Speaking and Listening internally marked. Guidance for speaking + listening in English, in exemplar tasks Internally verified, rolling programme of external verification

  8. Functional mathematics - Overview Separate tests for Level 1 and 2 Single paper test (1 hour 15mins) for each level Externally marked by Edexcel Will have open response and multiple choice questions Will be assessed in a range of contexts Calculators allowed

  9. Functional mathematics - Assessment Assesses the candidate’s ability to apply mathematical skills for a purpose and within a real life context Assesses how students choose the right operation for: Solving problems Processing calculations Interpreting and explaining situations

  10. Functional mathematics - Assessment Thematic tasks (three per paper) e.g. ‘vegetable patch’ Tasks combined with test style items Designed for On-screen assessment Language simple and direct Level of reading below assessment level

What’s changing for 2010? • GCSE Mathematics will be tiered and include functional mathematics content requirements at levels 1 and 2 for regular updates go to our website at: http://www.edexcel.com/quals/gcse/gcse10/maths/Pages/default.aspx • ‘Twinned’ GCSE Mathematics pilot • BTEC award in mathematical applications goes live • Functional Mathematics will also be introduced as a stand-alone qualification

Functional ICT - Overview Encourages people to demonstrate their ICT skills in a range of contexts and purposes Encourages learners to apply and transfer skills in ways that are appropriate to their situation Five levels: Entry 1, 2 and 3, Level 1 and Level 2 In order to achieve the qualification learners must demonstrate their competence in three skills areas: Using ICT systems Finding and selecting information Developing, presenting and communicating information

Functional ICT structure In order to achieve the qualification learners must demonstrate their competence in three skills areas: using ICT systems finding and selecting information developing, presenting and communicating information Five Levels – Entry 1 to 3, Level 1 and 2 3 day window for assessment in January and June series during pilot – moving toward larger windows and multiple assessment opportunities

Functional ICT - Assessment Unit 1: Separate tests for Level 1 and Level 2 Single computer based set test: 2 hours including printing time for each level Externally marked by Edexcel Comprising three or four linked practical tasks that learners must complete using standard office software Unit 2: In addition to the test, centres confirm candidates have met specific aspects during the course of their study such as Health & Safety and security of information Assessment feedback Please see Principal Examiners Report for good practice. In general candidates need to practice using data files (specifically text files), use their time well in relation to the marks to be gained for a question and to demonstrate better use of formulae in spreadsheets
