  2. Overview • The Bay of Pigs was an unsuccessful attempt by Cuban exiles to overthrow Cuba's Communist government in 1961. The exiles were trained and funded by the United States government, which opposed Cuban President Fidel Castro. • One reason that the US failed in this attempt, was JFK’s refusal to send in aircraft to assist the exiles.

  3. Background Information • 1,500 Cuban exiles landed in the Bay of Pigs in Cuba on April 1961. • They were met by a resistant force of Castro’s Army, and around 9,000 armed police. • The CIA’s stand was that, if the exiles could establish a beach head in the Bay of Pigs, the anti- Castro rebellion would come and assist them, rise up and defeat Castro.

  4. Details • An Airstrike was ordered on Castro’s airfield, destroying much of his air force, allowing for the exiles to make their way up the beach. • Kennedy, outraged by the use of air force, after he ordered them not to, canceling the second strike, a fatal mistake.

  5. Details Continued • The surviving amount of Castro’s Air force, three Sea Furies (Fighter jets) two T-33 Jets (soviet), and one B-26 began attacking the unloading Exiles, killing many. • As the bombers sunk one of the ships unloading the exiles, several hundred exiles stumbled upon the beach, without many weapons, they were taken down soon after.

  6. Casualties • 6 men from the Cuban air force when one of the bombers stalled, dropping it into the water. • 1,202 of the Cuban exiles were taken prisoner, out of the 1,500 that were originally in operation. • About 300 of the Cuban exiles were killed, whether it was it the assault on the beaches, or from an execution.

  7. Results • The Bay Of Pigs invasion was a huge embarrassment for the United States, seen as weakness by the Soviets, because Kennedy was a very young president. • Castro, and his army felt accomplished by this feat, and sent for more soviet aid, saying that this could happen again, and at any time.
