  1. Site-Based Data Curation at Yellowstone National Park • PI: Carole L. Palmer, GSLIS, CIRSS • Co-PIs: Bruce Fouke, Geology, Microbiology, Institute for Genomic Biology • Ann Rodman, National Park ServiceSayeedChoudhury, Data Conservancy, Johns Hopkins • Research team: • CIRSS: Andrea Thomer, Karen Baker, Karen Wickett, Virgil Varvel • IGB: Abigail Asangba • JHU: Tim DiLauro Photos used with permission from B. 2. Builds on base of data curation research and education Site-Based Data Curation at YNP 2012-2014 (IMLS) Curation Profiles Project 2007-2009 (IMLS) Data Conservancy 2009-2012 (NSF) Data Curation Education in Research Centers 2010-2014 Data Curation in the Humanities 2008-2012 Data Curation in theSciences 2006-2011

  3. Site-based data curation • Resource management at YNP has traditionally focused on physical resources (thermal features, specimens). • Policies and process for data curation typically have an institutional focus. • How do we bridge the gap between data curation and resource management? Framework of policies and processes for curation of research data generated at scientifically significant sites. LG-06-12-0706-12

  4. Systems Geobiology Exemplar case for earth and life science intersection YNP - Mecca for data collection in systems geobiology. Research questions range from origin of life on Earth to life on other planets. • Integrative science that requires: • chemical, physical, biological data • multiscale data (temporally, spatially) • data collection in field, and lab work

  5. Research Questions & Activities • What curation units and data parameters are needed for resource managers vs. scientists? • How should continuing series be curated and managed? • How can site and repository policies and processes be aligned? • Year 1: • Stakeholder Workshop • Follow-up interviews • Data inventories • Policy development • Year 2: • Curation processes • Data transfer workflows Curation team Repository team Policy team
