Overall Description of the Right Whale Photo Identification Project • Web-based crowd-sourcing application that helps scientist identify photo collections. • It is of interest to scientific, academic, and and online community. • The final matching of the whales is to be done by the researchers, but this app will provide the wisdom of the crowd to speed up the process.

Overall Description of the Right Whale Photo Identification Project Cont. • Researchers take aerial and boat based photographs of the whales and upload them to the app. • Photos become available to members to try and match against the photo catalog of known right whales hosted by the aquarium. • After the crowd has had time to match the whales, researchers can view the results to guide them in the final matching.

Product Perspective • Reduces the time researchers need to identify whale photos. • This approach has proven useful for astronomical objects. • The app will be easy to use and intuitive for the average internet user. • The project will be used as a legacy app for expansion into applications for identifying other cetacea.
