  1. Discipleship #1: The Obedient Christian “He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields it fruit in season.” --Psalms 1:3 “To Obey is Better Than Sacrifice” The Basis for Obedience • Keith Green sings a song called, “To Obey is better than sacrifice.” These are very powerful words. Why would he say that?

  2. “To Obey Is Better Than Sacrifice” “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.” --James 2:19

  3. “To Obey Is Better Than Sacrifice” • How does our understanding of who God is influence our obedience to Him? How important is love in our relationship with God? What if someone does not feel a love for God, but rather only fear?

  4. “To Obey Is Better Than Sacrifice” 1My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding— 3indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, 5then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. 6For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. --Proverbs 2:1-6 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” --Proverbs 1:7

  5. Obedience To God • What is our basis for obedience? • Tradition • Opinion • Self-Esteem • Others • God’s Word

  6. Obedience To God “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” --2 Tim. 3:16

  7. Obedience To God • Why is the Bible crucial in the matter of obedience?

  8. Obedience To God “I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You.” --Psalm 119:11

  9. Obedience To God • Turn to Matthew 5:20 and define obedience. • Were the Pharisees obedient? • What is God looking for? • Why is God so concerned with our obedience?

  10. Obedience To God • What is some of the fall out of living in sin?

  11. Things to Do • Memorize Psalms 119: 11 • Contact your prayer partner this week • Work on Lesson 2-God’s Word in Your Life • Come prepared next week to share with your prayer partner what Bible study you will be doing and what time and place you have selected for your quiet time.
