(an information poster) (B.M.A.S) Legal Aspects ² The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 is designed to protect individual healthcare practitioners. It also covers the use of safe equipment (sharps boxes, single use needles) as well as giving Needle Stick Injury guidance in conjunction with Local authority guidelines which must be followed¹ Be Aware Needle Stick Injury National Health Service (N.H.S) document “Sharpen Your Awareness” (1998) www.nhs/publications designed to advise health care practitioners regarding safe practice. • Needle Stick! • What should I do? • Encourage wound to bleed, ideally by holding it under running water. • Wash the wound with plenty of soap. • Dry it, cover it. • Seek urgent medical advice. • Go to the nearest Accident & Emergency OR contact your General Practitioner ( G.P). Seek advice from your governing body, The British Medical Acupuncture Society / British Acupuncture Council. ³ The Act outlines that the prevention of needle stick and Sharps injuries and thus the prevention of infections are management / clinical governance issues, which affect all healthcare workers. This includes contractors, agency staff, patients and visitors, all of whom may enter a clinical setting where Sharps are in use. Highlighting an individual and collective responsibility in relation to the Act. Improving my practice: Develop a policy for use within my clinic, reflecting key aspects of Health and Safety policy advice and that of my governing body . 6 (BAcC) • Possible risks • Blood-Borne Viruses: • Hepatitis B • Hepatitis C • HIV* 4/5 Assessing your injury/ risk.
