So: Speak out! • Questions are as good as answers! • Right or wrong? • When you reach a certain level of cognitive development (which you have!) this question gets less and less interesting! • Doesn't mean everything is “right” - no excuse for “waffling” • Share your thoughts and let's discuss them • If your thought is discussed that doesn't mean your grade goes down! • Saying nothing is worse than asking questions! • Make the discussion/topic yours!

I thank you for your welcome.”

  3. Today: 1. ??? 2. The End of the World 3. When Cultures Meet History seems to love your course! Jorge Mario Bergoglio (*1936), Jesuit (Societas Iesu Christi) Jesuits and the history of Spanish Colonisation: 1. Jesuit Reductions (settlements for indigenous people where they were expectd to convert). 2. Reductions were economically successful, people converted to Christianity yet could keep their culture … 3. The Jesuits were thrown out of South America by the King of Spain, when they got too powerful in certain areas and hindered the colonisation of further territory. 4. Scholars today still debate whether the Jesuit Reductions were a quite humane approach at evangelizing indegenous people or rather a terrible system of exploitation and religious indoctrination.

  4. WIKIPEDIA, s.v. Spanish colonization of the Americas, 03/13/13.

  5. Today: 1. ??? 2. The End of the World 3. When Cultures Meet When Cultures Meet • How would the different forms of behaviour you've discussed last lesson play out? • Sketch the way the contact between the two cultures would have developed.
