  2. Brief history • What Documents Does a Process Server Deliver? • Process Servers deliver a variety of legal documents, including writs, subpoenas to testify in court, a summons to appear in court, and formal complaints. In addition to serving these documents, process servers can also assist with filing appropriate documents in court, retrieving documents for you, and helping you track down a defendant.

  3. WHAT IS A PROCESS SERVER? • Process servers are needed in an assortment of tasks such as filing court papers, serving legal documents and document retrieval. Their principal JOB is to deliver or “serve” legal documents to a defendant or person involved in a court case. After serving any legal documents, process servers have to deliver actual evidence that the legal papers were served. The verification that is offered is referred to as an affidavit of service or proof of service, which must be notarized and given to the individual or company who required the papers to be served. Process servers are legally required to serve papers in the correct manner laid out by their state.

  6. Dangers of serving • COLUMBIA, Md (WMAR) - A 58-year-old Columbia woman is now facing attempted murder charges after a June 6 incident where she shot at a private process server who was attempting to serve a subpoena to the woman's sister. According to charging documents Shirley Anne Bolton fired a shot at a private process server. Police responded to the 8700 block of Carriage Hill Drive where the server had arrived to serve a subpoena to the woman's sister. The server had gone to the residence several times before in an attempt to serve the warrant. This time the server had walked to the front door, but as he approached, the door suddenly swung open and Bolton was standing there with a gun pointed at the man. Without saying a word, Bolton fired one shot at the server, missing him. Bolton yelled at the man and threatened to shoot and kill him. The woman's sister called 911. When officers arrived, Bolton still had the gun in her hand. Once she dropped the gun, she was taken into custody. Police obtained surveillance video that showed the server approach the door. The woman's sister says she heard Bolton yell that the "man is back and she was going to get her gun,"  and that she heard the shot when she was talking with the 911 operator. Bolton was charged attempted first and second degree murder, first and second degree assault, use of a firearm, handgun on person and reckless endangerment.
