  4. More than half the people come from the 10 most populated countries… • 21 are from China • 17 are from India • 5 are from the United States • 4 are from Indonesia • 3 are from Brazil • 3 are from Pakistan • 2 are from Russia • 2 are from Bangladesh • 2 are from Japan • 2 are from Nigeria

In the global village there are almost 6000 languages but more than half of the people speak these eight…. • 22 speak a Chinese dialect • 9 speak English • 8 speak Hindi • 7 speak Spanish • 4 speak Arabic • 4 speak Bengali • 3 speak Portuguese • 3 speak Russian hello Hola Selamat pagi Ni hao ma Ahlan Namaste Zdraz vooy teh

Ages : here are the ages of the villagers • 10 are children under age 5 • 10 are between 5 and 9 • 9.5 are between 10 and 14 • 9.5 are between 15 and 19 • 8 are between 20 and 24 • 8 are between 25 and 29 • 7.5 are between 30 and 34 • 7.5 are between 35 and 39 • 5.5 are between 40 and 44 • 5.5 are between 45 and 49 • 4.5 are between 50 and 54 • 4.5 are between 55 and 59 • 3 are between 60 and 64 • 3 are between 65 and 69 • 1.5 are between 70 and 74 • 1.5 are between 75 and 79 • 1 is over 79

  7. Religions : in the village of 100 people ….. • 32 are Christians • 19 are Muslims • 13 are Hindus • 12 practise shamanism, animisn and other folk religions • 6 are Buddhists • 2 belong to other global religions such as Baha’i, Shintoism, Sikhism • 1 is Jewish • 15 are non religious

  8. Food : the villagers rear animals which help to produce food or are a source of food • There are : • 31 sheep and goats • 23 cows, bulls and oxen • 15 pigs • 3 camels • 2 horses • 189 chickens (nearly twice as many chickens as people)

  9. There is no shortage of food in the global village but the food isn’t divided equally……… 50 people do not have a reliable source of food and are hungry some or all of the time 20 other people are severely undernourished Only 30 people always have enough to eat

  10. Air and water: fresh air and clean drinking water are necessities….. In the global village: 75 have access to safe water in their homes or within a short distance 25 have to spend a large part of each day getting water 60 have access to adequate sanitation 40 do not have access to public or household sewage disposal 68 breathe clean air 32 breathe air which is polluted

  11. Schooling and Literacy Of the 38 school-aged villagers, only 31 attend school Of the 88 people old enough to read, 71 can read at least a little but 17 cannot read at all More males are taught to read than females

  12. Wealth If all the money in the village were divided equally, each person would have about £3900 per year. However the money is not divided equally…. The richest 20 have more than £5600 a year The poorest 20 have less than £238 per year. The average cost of food, shelter and necessities in the village is £2500 to £3000 per year

  13. Access to Electricity In our global village… 76 have electricity 24 do not Of the 76 who have electricity most use it only for light at night. Some villagers have luxuries that depend on electricity. In the village there are: 42 radios 24 televisions 30 telephones 10 computers

  14. How has the village grown? Around 3000 years ago only 1person lived in the village 2500 years ago there were 2 people 2000 years ago there were 3 people 1000 years ago there were 5 people 500 years ago there were 8 people 350 years ago there were 10 people 200 years ago there were 17 people 100 years ago there were 32 people In 2002 there were 100 people

  15. The village in the future? The rate of growth of the global village means that there will probably be 250 people in the village by the year 2100. This is an important number as many experts think that 250 is the maximum number of people the village can sustain.
