DENSITY NOTES

DENSITY NOTES. A. What is Density? 1. Density - “Dasus” means Compact! 2. How much mass is in a given volume( space) Example: water = 1 gram for every 1 ml. 3. Density Formula = mass / volume a. Example = 20 grams / 5 mL = 4 g/mL ( sink in water ).

  1. DENSITY NOTES A. What is Density? 1. Density - “Dasus” means Compact! 2. How much mass is in a given volume( space) Example: water = 1 gram for every 1 ml.

  2. 3. Density Formula = mass / volume a. Example = 20 grams / 5 mL = 4 g/mL ( sink in water )

  3. B. Does size or amount of a substance change the density of a pure substance? 1.The amount of volume does not change the density of the object. a. Example: Oils Density is .9 g/ml

  4. 2. Mass and volume increase at the same rate.

  5. C. How is density related to sinking and floating in water? 1. Density of water is 1 g/mL 2. Densities are relative to each other 3. If density is less than 1g/mLit will float in water

  6. 4. If the density is more than 1 g/mLthen the object will sink in water

  7. D. How can density change in an open container like a boat or a submarine? 1. If volume is held constant, density is changed by increasing or decreasing the mass.

  8. E. Density causes different substances to layer

  9. a.example: all the same volume Salt Water Oil Rubbing Water Alcohol 1.2g/ml 1 g/ml .9g/ml .89g/ml
