  1. Significant Figures

  2. Rule # 1 • All non-zero digits are significant. Example: 137.4429 = 7 significant figures 6,459 = 4 significant figures 33 = 2 significant figures

  3. Practice 1. 7,334,982 2. 24 3. 5,999 4. 1,414,161,198 5. 8

  4. Practice ANSWERS 1. 7,334,982 =7 sig fig 2. 24 =2 sig fig 3. 5,999 =4 sig fig 4. 1,414,161,198 =10 sig fig 5. 8 = 1 sig fig

  5. Rule #2 • Leading zeros (zero’s at the beginning) do NOT count. Example: 00.99 = 2 sig figs 0.000006 = 1 sig fig 0.001467 = 4 sig figs

  6. Practice 6. 0.01 7. 00.09 8. 0.13 9. 0.0000056 10. 0.000398

  7. Practice ANSWERS 6. 0.01 = 1 sf 7. 00.09 =1 sf 8. 0.13 =2 sf 9. 0.0000056 =2 sf 10. 0.000398 =3 sf

  8. Rule #3 • Captive zeros (zeros between non-zero numbers) all count! Examples: 1.09 = 3 significant figures 3.00098 = 6 significant figures 0.00907 = 3 significant figures (*Hint: remember rule #2)

  9. Practice 11. 1.009 12. 1.0909 13. 9.9900101 14. 101,004 15. 30,000.3

  10. Practice ANSWERS 11. 1.009 = 4 sf 12. 1.0909 = 5 sf 13. 9.9900101= 8 sf 14. 101,004 = 6 sf 15. 30,000.3 = 6 sf

  11. Rule #4 • Trailing zeros count ONLY if they are after a significant figure and if the number has a decimal! Examples: 35.00 = 4 significant figures 3500 = 2 significant figures

  12. Practice 16. 4,500 17. 280.00 18. 45.0 19. 56,000 20. 7,000.00

  13. Practice ANSWERS 16. 4,500 =2 17. 280.00 =5 18. 45.0 =3 19. 56,000 =2 20. 7,000.00 =6

  14. Rule #5 • Combine rules where needed. Examples: Which rules apply? 0.009070 409080 0.90099

  15. Practice 21. 0.009800 22. 9.00709 23. 9,000.00

  16. Practice ANSWERS 21. 0.009800 = 4 22. 9.00709 = 6 23. 9,000.00 = 6

  17. Rule #6 • Scientific Notation numbers are all significant digits. Examples: 4.56 X 105 = 3 sig figs 7.000 X 103 = 4 sig figs

  18. Practice 24. 7.77 x 10 7 25. 6.0 x 10 2

  19. Practice ANSWERS 24. 7.77 x 10 7 = 3 significant 25. 6.0 x 10 2 = 2 significant
