  2. Parent wants your personal information… • Cell phone • Home address • Home phone number • Relationship status • Email • Birth date

What to Give and What to Keep Private • Phone numbers, cell and home are appropriate • School email is definitely appropriate • Relationship status would be up to you but is not really appropriate to ask or be given • Home address is not appropriate or something that needs to be known • Birth date should also be up to you, it is not an issue that a parent needs to know

Parent’s Requests… • You be their child’s personal tutor • After school or weekends? • At school, their house, public library or your house? • Do you get paid or is this your free time (volunteer)? • Is this above you? Should a specialist be contacted? • You give their child extra time on an assignment • Why do they need it? Was there enough notice to complete? • Could benefit from help at home to help them reinforce the info • You give their child extra help (attention) • Can’t give every child extra help • Struggling perhaps parents can step in and help

Parents Complain… • Their child is being bullied • Their child’s grades aren’t high enough • Their child doesn’t understand/grasp the material • Their child is constantly being punished for behavior (sent to the office) • Child has no friends • Child does not like who they sit next to in class

  7. Not the Right Time.. Parent wants to discuss information about their child at Back to School Night or during an event where all the parents were invited into the class for something.

  8. Not the Right Time.. Tell the parent nicelythat you would love to talk about their child with them but that now you do not have enough time to be able to fairly discuss the student. You are willing to meet with them separately at any time that isconvenient for them. If meeting at another time is inconvenient for the parent suggestemail or phone conversation during a specific time.

Strategies for Working with Parents • Listen to them carefully • Be constructive • Give specific suggestions (less TV time, more reading time, certain activities to do) • Make parents a resource • Use parents to help out • Offer to work collaboratively • Buy more time to resolve issue (think about it first and then give advice) • Seek support from principals, your mentor, other teachers
