Writing an Abstract • The purpose of the study (or WHY?) should be the first or second sentence Function: An abstract is usually a one-paragraph summary of the major points in a paper and typically follows the structure of the manuscript. • A brief description of the experimental design and methods used (WHEN and HOW) should follow. • Report the major findings including quantitative results or trends (WHAT did you find?) that address WHY? • Summarize your conclusions (WHAT does it mean?).

  2. Limnology & Oceanography Details • Single paragraph of no more than 250 words (15-17 lines of 12-point font) • Summarize rather than advertize important findings & their significance • Must stand alone – so no references.
