  1. February 24, 2011 Voice “Those Unfortunate Baudelaire Orphans!” Day 4 • How would you characterize the voice of the essay? • Compare it to the short excerpt I have given you. • How might the author’s voice be a problem for his readers who have not read the books?

  2. Student Goals • Demonstrate basic comprehension of “Through the Tunnel.” • Identify and analyze symbolism in “Through the Tunnel.”

  3. Quick Quiz: “Through the Tunnel” • Name a difference between the beach Jerry goes to and the one his mother goes to. • What amazing feat do the local boys perform that makes Jerry nervous? • What item does Jerry beg his mother to buy him? • Why does Jerry start getting nose bleeds? • What happens when Jerry finally tries to swim through the tunnel?

Active Reading Questions • Read questions A, C, F, H, I, J, K, and N. • After you read each question, try to find the place in the text that would help you answer it. • Are there some questions that will take more work than simply looking back in the text? • When you get to your group, divide the questions evenly. • Assign each group member at least TWO questions. • Each group member will be responsible for writing an excellent answer for his/her assigned questions.

Active Reading Questions • Write your excellent answer in your brown literature book! • An excellent answer will: • Use a part of the question in the first sentence. • Contain at least one specific example from the text. • Include explanation that goes beyond the literal meaning of the text. • When you get to your group, each person will share his/her answers. • Go in alphabetical order. • The person with the answer must: • Read the question. • Read his/her answer. • Show the group where in the text he/she found information to help create the answer.
